The Project
Spokes4Folks was the Leadership Gilroy Class of 2014’s community project. The goal was to provide bicycles and basic transportation to South County residents in need. The idea emerged after the class visited the California State Capitol and discussed local challenges, including the lack of affordable transportation for people trying to get to work, school or essential services.
The class launched a bicycle donation drive and aimed to collect 100 gently used bikes and raised $5,000 for helmets, bike locks, parts and a hand full of new bicycles.
To support the effort, the class created flyers, a website, a Facebook page and placed donation bins throughout the community.
The main donation event was held on August 2, 2014 at the Gilroy Center for the Arts.
